Adult Coloring Book Vintage Series The Masters of Fashion Illustration Wendy Piersall Books Reviews
The pictures are pretty and there is a nice variety. The pages are one-sided; however, the paper is slightly thinner than I expected. I use a plastic backing sheet when I use markers with this book.
A different fashion book that seems similar to some Erte designs. The book is well done, and the paper iswell suited for colored pencils. Markers will most likely ned a sheet of paper behind the page being colored.
If you like vintage magazine cover illustration, you will love this book. Paper is a bit flimsy - you will need to put a sheet behind your page because even gel pens will leave a shadow, however, drawings are one sided so that makes it a plus. I ordered a copy for myself and sent one to my sister, who says she especially loves it.
If you like less of the busy busy busy patterns that are meaningless to me, you'll really go for this book! Very attractive pictures to color with pencils, markers (watch out for bleed through!) or light water colors if you're that accomplished. Hey, crayons work too!
There's enough variety to keep me interested, and I really feel I've reached a goal when I finish a page.
The illustrations are lovely and the artist did a great job. I love art deco/nouveau. This book fits that need. I like the pages at the front of the book where you can test your coloring medium. That's really nice and not something I've seen in other books. Obviously the author has some favorite illustrators, which I also enjoyed. Just wished there were a few for Erte as he's a favorite. Otherwise, really lovely book. Very engaging.
Not many colouring book artists change direction, but this is what Wendy has done.
We know her as a creator of thematic mandala books but here she has returned to her first love, of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
This book glows with Wendy's passion for this period. It's totally infectious for me and I'm loving colouring these images. I have a strong feeling that Wendy has found her true niche with this book.
The images are based on the original fashion artworks of five artists from this period - Helen Dryden, Erte, George Wolfe Plank, Frank Leyendecker and George Barbier. They dominated fashion magazines of the time.
Wendy has adapted these illustrations to be more suitable for us to colour, while still being faithful to the essence of the original drawings.

Not only it has fabulous illustrations, but each image is printed on one side. That gives the colorist more flexibility in using gel pens, pencils, markers, or any combo of these to express their creativity. Important Tip ALWAYS place a thick sheet of paper (cardstock) to protect the next image from pigment bleeding, especially with markers, watercolors, and watercolor pencils. Not only that, the next image will not have pen/pencil "dent' marks from previous coloring page. Personally, I save and use "expired" laminated signs that my workplace will just throw away. I just make sure they are clean, smooth (no thumb tack holes) and free of any adhesive (double-sided tape or glue).
